The sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which was first teased as part of this year’s CinemaCon, then confirmed during this year’s Ghostbusters Day celebration, has been officially given a release date of Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2023, Deadline reports!
The film is expected to pick up in New York, tieing into Afterlife‘s ending, which had the Ecto-1 reentering the city, along with a post-credit scene that saw Ernie Hudson’s character, Winston Zeddemore, arriving at the firehouse, and a close-up of the abandoned Containment Unit.
During Ghostbusters Day, the filmmaking duo of Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan announced that the sequel had been given the codename of Firehouse, saying:
“We’re writing another movie. Tonight, we’re going to share the code name for the next chapter in the Spengler family story,” adding, “The last time we saw Ecto-1, it was driving back into Manhattan: the home of Ghostbusters. That’s where our story begins. The code name is FIREHOUSE.”
As mentioned, the upcoming film will continue the “Spengler family story,” likely confirming the return of characters Phoebe, Trevor, and Callie Spengler, played in Afterlife by Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, and Carrie Coon, respectively.
There’s been no official announcement from Sony on who’ll be back to reprise their roles.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife was released in North America on November 19th, 2021, and grossed more than 200m worldwide. In addition to the upcoming sequel, an animated feature-length film, an animated Netflix series, an exciting new VR experience, and a return to comics have also been announced.
