Sony Pictures has revealed the first trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, a direct followup to 1989’s Ghostbusters 2 from director Jason Reitman. Check out the Ghostbusters: Afterlife trailer below!

12-year-old Mckenna Grace (Captain Marvel, Annabelle Comes Home) stars in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, with Carrie Coon (The Leftovers) playing her mother and Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things, IT) as her brother. Paul Rudd (Avengers: Endgame) will be playing a teacher in the film, while Oliver Cooper and Bokeem Woodbine will also be featured. Original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts are all expected to return for the sequel.

The film centers on a family who moves to a small town and discover its hidden secrets. Ghostly, discoveries the family makes lead them directly to some old recognizable artifacts of the original Ghostbusters, such as the PKE Meter, and apparently the original busters themselves.

The sad, somber trailer centers around a single mom named Callie, who moves into a mansion owned by her late father, who she never really knew.

It turns out, her father was Dr. Egon Spengler, played by the late Harold Ramis in the original Ghostbusters and its sequel. Whilst searching the creepy barn, Egon's collection of spores, moulds and fungus are discovered. It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, given how his granddaughter Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) is his spitting image. However, it does raise some questions about when Spengler had a child, why she wasn’t part of his life, and why Callie was seemingly kept secret from everyone he knew. Considering a few of those old friends of Egon will be appearing in Afterlife, it’ll be an intriguing mystery to uncover.

As Phoebe and her brother Travis explore the old and creepy mansion, they learn all about their grandfather and his legacy as a member of the Ghostbusters—partially thanks to their science teacher. Together, they uncover a strange, supernatural occurrence underneath their small town and have to work together to stop it. I’m guessing it’s going to involve the busting of some ghosts—because of course—including Slimer, who makes a mischievous appearance during the trailer. It's also revealed the the Ecto-1 has a "gunner seat" for use with proton packs.

According to Reitman, the sequel “connects back to the Manhattan Crossrip of 1984” that was seen in the first film. “As the family arrives at an old farm, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters. Trevor and Phoebe are about to find out who their grandfather was and whether they’re ready to pick up the proton pack themselves.”

Jason Reitman (Juno, Young Adult, Tully) directed the new film, taking over from his father Ivan Reitman who helmed the first two and will produce. Reitman, who had a cameo in 1989’s Ghostbusters 2, co-wrote the script with Gil Kenan (Monster House, Poltergeist), who is no stranger to ghost stories.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is slated to drop in theaters on July 10, 2020.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the fourth movie in the Ghostbusters franchise, and the second recent release. The last movie, Ghostbusters (2016), was an all-female reboot of the series that Ivan Reitman now says takes place in a different storytelling universe. The film was the target of numerous online troll campaigns, and wound up with middling reviews and box office results.
