Sony Releases New Photo From "Ghostbusters" (2016)

Sony Pictures (via Empire) has released a shiny, brand new image from their upcoming Ghostbusters movie, featuring the title heroes preparing for a fight and lighting up their proton packs!

The electrifying image shows the new line-up of (from left to right) Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy), Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon), Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) and Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones), unloading their proton packs at a winged demon in a rock concert, in a scene briefly glimpsed in the trailer.

"I wanted my ladies to be badass," Paul Feig told Empire. "I wanted them to get in over their heads and fight ghosts. I like the idea of them having to enter a giant setting and take on ghosts."

There has been, it must be said, quite a reaction to the new vintage of Ghostbusting, and some of it has been fairly poisonous. But Feig's response has been unapologetic.

"I like action movies," he tells Empire. "I got to play with that in Spy, and it felt very natural here. It makes it fun and very unexpected for people when they hear it's four lady Ghostbusters."

"It may be quite different than what they think."

Ghostbusters 2016 also stars Chris Hemsworth as the new secretary, Andy Garcia as the Mayor of New York City, Michael K. Williams as a character named "Hawkins," Matt Walsh as a character named "Rourke," and Neil Casey as the film's villain. New York City's NY1 news anchor Pat Kiernan is also set to appear as news anchor in the film.

The Ghostbusters movie is directed by Paul Feig from a script he co-wrote with Katie Dippold. It will debut in theaters on July 15.

Here's the films official synopsis:

"Thirty years after the original film took the world by storm, Ghostbusters is back and fully rebooted for a new generation. Director Paul Feig combines all the paranormal fighting elements that made the original franchise so beloved with a cast of new characters, played by the funniest actors working today. Get ready to watch them save the world this summer!"
