Slimer to Make Long-Awaited Return In 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire'

With next year’s highly anticipated sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, all set to bring the franchise back to the bustling streets of New York City, Sony Pictures has confirmed the return of a beloved series mainstay and often firehouse mascot: Slimer!

In a new video posted today (Dec. 11) to the official Ghostbusters social accounts, a lenticular theater display is shown, made to look like the entrance of the Ghostbusters Firehouse. While the legendary Ecto-1 takes its rightful place as the centerpiece, it’s our first look at Slimer that has fans talking, getting paired alongside another return, Afterlife’s troublesome Mini-Pufts, and a few new unnamed specters!

"Slimer is back along with a new empire of spirits waiting to be discovered. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is coming soon exclusively to movie theaters."

While details on exactly how Slimer will fit into Frozen Empire are currently locked down in the containment unit, this initial teaser undeniably pays homage to the character’s classic design, instantly evoking memories of the original 1984 comedy. In a nod to the filmmaking style of that era, Ghostbusters News is reporting that practical effects were used whenever possible for Slimer’s big-screen homecoming.

Another return that shouldn’t be all that surprising is that of the Mini-Pufts, as not only are they heavily featured in the just-released VR video game Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, but the tiny troublemakers also took the spotlight in recent marketing campaigns, conquering the Las Vegas Sphere and becoming a focal point of the annual Licensing Expo earlier this year.

In speaking with Ghost Corps, Ghostbusters News has confirmed that these displays are now beginning to arrive in cinemas, with some featuring the rather trippy lenticular design shown in today’s video.

In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old, must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.

Scheduled to arrive in theaters on Easter weekend, March 29th, 2024, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire stars Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Logan Kim, Celeste O’Connor, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts, in addition to series newcomers Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster, and Emily Alyn Lind.
