While just an excerpt from their interview with Kenan, with that full feature available in February’s Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes issue, the article does provide fans with some new details, in particular, following the events of Afterlife, Kenan confirming that the Ghostbusters saga is now in a “post-Gozerian era,” teasing an “entirely new mythology” paired with “terrifying stakes.”

“Because the Spengler family story drove the narrative in Afterlife, bringing Gozer back to center-stage was a natural way to close the book on the past,” adding, “But we are now in the post-Gozerian era of the Ghostbusters saga, so that means we’re able to stretch out and create an entirely new mythology. And that’s thrilling as a storyteller, because there are all-new and terrifying stakes with fresh visual references to draw on.”

While Frozen Empire appears to introduce plenty of new ideas, including new and upgraded ghostbusting equipment, it will still very much honor the franchise’s rich legacy, as alongside a number of series originals returning, among them Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts, arguably, the franchise’s most prominent character, New York City is back, with the Big Apple being caught in the grasp of the Death Chill. Also, as a slime-soaked reminder, this past week, Sony Pictures confirmed the return of often-times firehouse mascot Slimer, being first shown on a theater display.

Crossing the streams of the past with the present, Kenan, who co-wrote Afterlife with Jason Reitman, now taking over directorial duties, would recount an early moment on Frozen Empire‘s set, saying:

“I remember there was a moment halfway through the first morning of directing one of the big scenes where I looked at the monitor, and just caught myself with the biggest grin ever,” continuing, “Finally, it dawned on me that I was calling ‘Action!’ and ‘Cut!’ on some of my very favourite characters in movies, working on a big cinematic scale on something that I really cared about. I try to hold on to that feeling. I still have it now, finishing the film.”
