Ghostbusters High: Ghostbusters Director Not a Fan of Dan Aykroyd’s Prequel Idea

Longtime Ghostbusters fans will know that star and original writer Dan Aykroyd has always been the biggest cheerleader for the franchise. Throughout the 90s and 2000s, he took part in countless interviews, always appearing optimistic and enthusiastic when the conversation touched on a then possible third film, frequently saying a script was ready or near-complete and that they were waiting for the studio’s approval.

Over the past six years, we’ve seen two different Ghostbusters films arrive in theaters, the 2016 reboot, Answer the Call, and last year’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which to many was the third chapter we’ve been promised since the late 1990s.

Given Afterlife’s success, there’s no doubt we’ll see future Ghostbusters projects, with Aykroyd persistent that an idea he talked about back in 2019 could work; a prequel that would see the Ghostbusters in high school.

In an interview with Calgary’s 660 City News, Aykroyd first revealed the idea, saying he hoped that it would possibly lead to a television project.

“I’ve written “Ghostbusters High,” where they meet in New Jersey in 1969 and we’re looking to do that as probably a glorified feature or pilot within the next maybe five years…. And it would lead to a television project and I thought of (Ivan Reitman) immediately for that. It’s on his desk but that’s years away from the current project. But it’s a neat idea for a prequel. Imagine casting the three characters as teenagers!”

As part of the Ghostbusters: Afterlife 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release, Aykroyd, alongside original stars Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson and Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman are interviewed, with Aykroyd once again bringing up the idea, earning smiles and noticeable laughter from his peers.

“Picture this, Ghostbusters in High School. I wrote a prequel. Now, I think it’s some of the best writing I’ve ever done, and (Ivan Reitman) will tell you to cut this out of the piece, but at some point, you know, we gotta know where they came from, Ivan. We do. And I was disappointed with the reaction of that one.”

With a smile on his face, Reitman stayed quiet during Aykroyd’s on-camera pitch.
