Ever since the first teaser trailer to Ghostbusters: Afterlife was released, that presented us with a glimpse of a rusted out Ecto-1 from the first film, instead of the flashier Ecto-1A as seen in Ghostbusters II, fans have been curious as to how director Jason Reitman would address the happenings of the first sequel.
Now, with Afterlife in theaters, many fans wondering if Ghostbusters II is even canon, as, despite a few Easter eggs from the sequel appearing, such as Ray's Occult book store, occurrences such as the river of slime are never mentioned, with the script seeming to go out of its way to not reference the events from 1989.
As part of a new interview with Uproxx, director Jason Reitman has come forward to let fans know that the events from 1989 are still 100% intact and canon.
“No, Ghostbusters II [is] definitely canon. There are references to Ghostbusters II in Afterlife. We meet Ray working at Ray’s Occult. The toaster from Ghostbusters II is in the kitchen in the farmhouse. There’s actually lots of lost Ghostbusters II details but nobody knows Ghostbusters II outside of Vigo the Carpathian and the Ghostbusters II logo. So there’s this assumption that it is not canon but it is definitely canon.”
The director was also asked about having the Ecto-1 in the film, rather than the Ecto-1A as seen in Ghostbusters II, with Reitman answering:
“I wish I could talk to you about that.“
Further pressed for an answer, the director slightly elaborated:
“Well, I’m just saying that’s a plot that is not in this film and we have ideas moving forward.“
While it would’ve been great to have seen more Ghostbusters II influences in the film, it’s understandable given the overarching story connection between the 1984 original and Afterlife. Who knows, maybe we’ll see the return of Vigo the Carpathian in an upcoming sequel. Remember, death is but a doorway, time is but a window, he’ll be back.
